This project developed as a new and different way for me to approach songwriting and recording. Basically, I tried to make songs that musically complement paintings by Rene Magritte. In March 2008, I spent a day recording drums; each take was live and unplanned, and I just tried to play drum parts that I thought "went with" the paintings. I ended up recording 11 drum tracks total. Afterwards, I edited the drum recordings that I liked best into songs structures, and then wrote the music and words. And that's how the four songs linked below were made, very unlike my normal write-a-song-on-guitar process. They are lo-fi and atmospheric - check them out.
The songs are based on these paintings: La Chateau des Pyrenees (1959); The Lost Jockey (1948); The Song of Love (date unknown); and the The Empty Mask (1928).
I also recorded drum parts based on the following paintings, but I’m not sure what will come of these recordings at this point: La Grande Famille (1963); Les Amants I (1928); Homesickness (1940); La Trahison Des Images (1928–29); Golconde (1953); Flowers Of The Abyss I (1928).
